BAAITS is led by a volunteer board of directors we refer to as our Core Group.  The Core Group can have as many as 9 members, according to our bylaws.  The Core strives for a diverse group of men and women, trans-identified members, elders, and young people.  To become a Core member, we encourage people to attend our regularly monthly Two-Spirit Roundtable meetings.  The Core nominates new members to join us in the leadership group.

The BAAITS Core Group nominates one or two Core members to serve as Chair or Co-Chairs.  These members provide administrative support, apply for grant funding, and serve as the voice of the group.  Any Core member is eligible for a Co-Chair position after initially serving on the Core group.  When funding is available, BAAITS maintains a part-time staff member.  Staff help to support the Co-Chairs as they handle administrative requirements, move projects forward, and provide outreach and recruitment services to the community.

J. Miko Thomas is an enrolled citizen of the Chickasaw Nation. Active in his Nation since his youth and several organizations later, Miko found his path in the activist community at the University of Oklahoma. Later Miko moved to California after serving in the US Navy during Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Desert Recovery campaigns and would once again return to volunteering for the community. He has been active in the Two-Spirit, Native American, LGBT, and Artists community ranging from educational work to fundraising to social challenges.

Derek Smith (Anishinaabe) is an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan, where he was born and raised. He and his partner of 9 years, Lucius, have been living in California for 5 years. Derek really appreciates the strong and supportive Two-Spirit community that exists locally and thanks all those who have supported BAAITS in becoming what it is today.   His professional passions lie around health and social welfare issues, and he is always working to bring new opportunities to our community to live healthy and live well.  It is a blessing to know all my T-S brothers and sisters in the Bay Area.

Sally Ramon (Tohono O'odham) is a founding member of BAAITS, revered elder, and all-around sweetheart.  Sally is a veteran who served in the Army, and is retired after years of service the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center, and over 13 years serving the City of San Francisco Planning Department.  Sally is a performer who always brings a "touch of class" to the stage.  She has a great sense of humor and enjoys spending time with the local Two-Spirit crew.

Nazbah Tom is Navajo, and is currently a drama therapist working at the Native American Health Center's Family & Child Guidance Clinic in the Mission District.  The primary focus of her work is decolonization as an individual and communal practice.  She enjoys hiking, reclaiming wood and making outdoor furniture, reading, and dinosaurs.

Jim Eagle was born on the Sisseton Wahpeton reservation in South Dakota.  Member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate.  I grew up in New England and went to college in New York.  I have lived in SF since 1987.  I have been with my partner Joseph for over 19 years.  I have worked in Accounting & Client Services for over 25 years in various industries.  I enjoy volunteering and have sat on several non-profit (501C-3) boards of directors including the SF chapter of National Council on Alcoholism and other Drug Addictions (NCADA) for 5 years.  I also have an avid interest in boxing and have recently started training boxing students at Michael the Boxer's Gym in SOMA section of SF.

Ruth Villasenor is Chiricahua Apache and Mexican. The Co-Owner of a business in Oakland, Paws & Claws, A Natural Pet Food Store, the Native American Outreach Director for Marriage Equality USA, Filmmaker, "Traditional Indigenous Values" and a community activist allowing her to follow a role she believes was a traditional Two Spirit role.  Bridging communities together, reconnecting natives to cultural traditions and non-natives to the gay/two-spirit community. She has worked hard helping increase acceptance of homosexuality in communities that are not always tolerant. Ruth has been a vehicle for proud unity and change in her community.
